History of the Arabian Horse In America and their Origin

By Ferman Ansel

John Rogers was one of America's premiere foundation Arabian horse breeders. He purchased and bred several significant horses, such as the immortal *Serafix  who sired more than 30 national winners. This man and his horses are a separate story who deserves their own section, so I am going to mention here his importation from Spain in 1965 of the mare *Yamina, sired by Zurich by Malvito and out of the mare Brussa II.

John Bred *Yamina to *Serafix and produced the award winning sons SX Conquistador and SX Coronado who carried on the outcross legacy of the Spanish  Arabian and  they have produced several hundred offspring and are still very popular today.

In 1971 Jay and Dorothy Stream along with Major and Mrs., Hedley went to Spain to inspect the Vera mares (The original certificates of these mares were burnt by rebels in a civil war and the Yeguada Militar had renamed the mares and put the prefix VERA in front of their names).

They purchased *AN MALIK from  John Marc Valerio, who bought his dam Ispahan from MariPaz Murga Iqual de Heredia, and bred to Galero at MariPaz' insistence, and imported him to their ranch in San Luis Obispo California. The Stream's offered the Spanish Military one million dollars for Galero, but they said no, they do not sell their stallions at any price.

In 1974 *Abha Hamir owned by Pedro Salas won the Spanish National Female Championship as a yearling. Two years later his daughter Marieta Salas-Princess Tchkotoua and her husband bought the LA LOMITA RANCH in San Luis Obispo and imported *Abha Hamir sired by Bambu and out of Garbi and *Oral a black mare by Garbo and out of Jacerina.

*Abha Hamir won the Canadian and U.S.A. National Champion Halter Mare class as well as Scottsdale in 1979. At that time she was the only mare in the world to be National Champion of three different nations.

In 1977  Jack and Marjory Tone selected the dark grey three year old *Sidi-Brahim from the herd of Spanish breeder, Don Diego Mendez to outcross on their Fadjur Daughters. *Sidi-Brahim's sire is Jacio by Tabal and his dam  Dalia IV, a chestnut mare was a daughter of Maquillo out of another Maquillo daughter.

*Sidi-Brahim had won a Medalla de Oro in Spain and sired the Reserve Spanish National Champion Mare, Lyria (dam of the 1983 Nations Cup Champion, *Jartum). Big Sid from Madrid as he is affectionately called by Marge's daughter Jackie Polk and his current owner, has sired many champions.

He is the sire of  Sidcerely Your, Fad Bravo, Sidi-Baha, Sids Fadlila whose son in Brazil by Ali Jamaal went Brazil reserve National Champion, and the promising Julio Brahim, Sidon Juan, and Jair Tamaal, all are set to carry on his legacy well into the next century.

In 1977 Phyllis Austad of Belle Aire Farms in Medford Oregon purchased the legendary mare *Yamina and  in 1978  the mare *Albahaca Montesa, and the stallion Amoroso de Espana. She bred *Albahaca Montesa, to the stallion Amoroso de Espana and produced the very popular stallion Valeroso. She also Purchased the stallion *Abha Don in 1978 who would prove to be a  a successful sire in her breeding program.

About this same time several more note worthy people would become interested  in the Spanish Arabian. The famous singer and entertainer Wayne Newton purchased *GG Samir and  some of the Steen imports, he added *Sabiduria, *Rapaza, and *Ventolina to his broodmare band. Pat Dempsey of Wapiti Ranch Arabians near Steamboat Springs Colorado Purchased at a Wayne Newton auction WN Mi Kerida (*An Malik x *Sabiduria)  for $500,000.00.

Bill and Marta Owens of Owens Arabians in Tempe, Arizona purchased the great motion stallion *El Moraduke. Dale and Rita Collins in Kalispell, Montana purchased from Elizabeth Sauser the great mares *SZ jarilla and *SZ Jaulyn. Gary and Linda Erikson of QB Arabians in Dayton Minnesota purchased the exquisite mare *Omaha. Bill and Marge Little of Littles Arabians in Kalispell, Montana imported the mares *Candelariaa and *Cainhoa, and the Stallion * Littles Pizzaz and *Rastano. Ken and Peg Johnson of Grand Junction Colorado imported the very nice Stallion *Figuroso and Rocky Chancler imported the big bay trotting horse *Numaa.
